Polish authorities have conducted the largest operation of its kind in over a decade, securing more than a tonne of heroin hidden in decorative bricks from the UAE at Gdynia port.

At the port in Gdynia, Polish authorities have seized more than a tonne of heroin. The value of the drugs has been estimated at nearly 220 million zloty (approximately 1.3 billion Czech crowns). According to media reports, it was a record consignment of smuggled narcotic substances.
"This is the largest operation of this type in over ten years," Polish Interior Minister Marcin Kierwiński said before journalists. The narcotics originated from Iran, according to police commander Marek Boroń.
The drugs were hidden in a shipment of decorative bricks from the United Arab Emirates. British colleagues alerted Polish customs officers to the suspicious delivery.
In connection with the smuggled heroin, police detained three Polish citizens last month – two men and a woman aged between 33 and 43. The prosecutor has already brought charges against them. Polish media emphasise that the case is not yet closed.
The amount of narcotic substances seized by Polish police since 2022 has increased by 650 per cent, according to the AFP news agency, citing Interior Ministry data. This year alone, officers have secured over 83 tonnes of drugs valued at more than 600 million zloty (3.4 billion Czech crowns), whilst last year the total amount of seized substances was 29 tonnes. In the first five months of this year, police also detected 49 laboratories and four cannabis plantations.
