An incident involving a 47-year-old man in uniform took place on 31 May at a property in Łęczna county. Two young men, both over twenty years old, were engaged in repairing a car when the father of one of them entered the premises.
According to the findings of investigators from the Lublin Regional Prosecutor's Office, the Territorial Defence soldier poured flammable liquid over one of the mechanics, then threw a lit cigarette at him. In the view of prosecutor Marcin Kozak, the perpetrator also hindered the provision of first aid to the victim.
The injured man was taken to hospital with extensive injuries to his body. Doctors described the patient's condition as serious – his life is in danger.
The suspect was apprehended following a brief chase. At the moment of capture, he had alcohol in his system. He is currently being held in police custody. He is likely to face charges on Tuesday. The proceedings are being conducted by the military division of the Lublin Regional Prosecutor's Office.
The unit commander made the decision to remove the man from the ranks of the territorial defence service. In a statement issued by the force, it was noted that the incident was not connected with the performance of military duties or the carrying out of military tasks.
"There is no place in our ranks for conduct that violates the honour of the Armed Forces of the Republic of Poland and the values that every person wearing a uniform should represent," the statement said. In view of the interests of the ongoing investigation, the military is not providing additional information.
