A man being sought in connection with the death of a Polish Army soldier is beyond the reach of Polish law enforcement. According to an unofficial report from RMF FM, the suspect in the killing of Mateusz Sitek has found refuge on Belarusian territory.

The tragedy occurred on 28 May 2024 in the Dubicz Cerkiewne area in the Podlasie region. During a patrol near the border, a confrontation took place in which the soldier was stabbed. He died from his injuries.

Although a wanted notice was issued for the perpetrator, the Polish prosecution office encountered obstacles in its efforts to bring him to face justice. The authorities in Minsk are not providing the required international cooperation. Given this situation, the preliminary investigation has been suspended.

The decision to halt the investigation means that for now there is no possibility of interrogating the main suspect or presenting him with formal charges in the presence of a defence lawyer. Polish services are, however, continuing operational activities aimed at establishing a full picture of what happened.
