Context: second attack in schools in recent days
The Pitești incident comes days after a violent attack at a school in Bistrița, where a seventh-grade pupil, aged 13, entered with a knife and repeatedly struck a teacher as well as another pupil who intervened to protect her. According to News.ro, the boy allegedly sought out another child in the class, the stated reason being that child's ethnic background. The attack was reportedly announced in advance on TikTok, and the perpetrator reportedly stated he had been planning it for eight months.
The teacher attacked at "Ștefan cel Mare" Secondary School in Bistrița is stable and showing a favourable prognosis following surgery, officials at the medical facility announced on Tuesday, noting that she remains hospitalised. Police have opened a criminal case to identify the person who distributed images captured during the attack.
Adrian Briciu, chief prosecutor at the Bistrița-Năsăud Court, said on Tuesday that the pupil had not yet been interviewed, nor had his parents — his father is not in the country, and his mother is with the minor at hospital in Cluj. Investigators found that all evidence points to premeditated action: the boy presented himself at school wearing a military-style helmet, a balaclava, gloves, and a pocket knife. Messages in English were found in the bathroom where he equipped himself before the attack, and according to prosecutors, "extremist markings, legionnaire-extremist, far-right". Prosecutors also noted that the minor does not appear to regret his actions. Under current legislation, he is not criminally liable due to his age.
