Zvolen New Year's tragedy investigated: charges over death from carbon monoxide
Banská Bystrica regional police have clarified the death of a 24-year-old man, who was found lifeless on 1 January this year in a residential building on Alexyho Street in Zvolen. According to ta3.com, a 72-year-old man has been charged in connection with the case with the crime of negligent killing, which carries a sentence of up to three years' imprisonment.
The investigation involved forensic experts and specialists from the Criminal Investigation Institute in Slovenská Ľupča. Police worked with several theories, including intoxication by an unidentified substance.
A key lead came from an operation in March this year, when police officers together with firefighters measured elevated levels of carbon monoxide and carbon dioxide in the same residential building. The operation required evacuation of all residents of the building and its circumstances became part of a comprehensive investigation.
"From the investigation conducted, expert analysis and statements from specialists at the Criminal Investigation Institute, the authorised officer concluded that the 24-year-old man died as a result of acute carbon monoxide intoxication," police stated. Experts simultaneously identified the cause of the problem in the building — neglect of maintenance of the flow heater.
Police on this occasion appeal to residents and property owners not to underestimate regular professional inspection of gas appliances, boilers and chimneys. "Carbon monoxide is an extremely dangerous gas, which is colourless and odourless, and therefore a person may not notice it at all," police warned, adding that its leakage can have fatal consequences in a short time.
