Navan disappearance of Mark Duffy reclassified as murder investigation

Gardaí have upgraded the missing person case of 43-year-old Mark Duffy, last seen in Navan on 3 October 2022, to a murder investigation.

Navan case reclassified as murder four years after man vanishes

An Garda Síochána has reclassified the disappearance of 43-year-old Mark Duffy as a murder investigation, rte.ie reports, four years after he was last seen in Navan on 3 October 2022.

In the weeks before he vanished, Duffy had been homeless and living in a tent in Navan town. On the morning of his last confirmed sighting, he was spotted at the Post Office in Johnstown Shopping Centre at 10.50am. CCTV footage later placed him on the Commons Road at approximately 2.45pm, walking into McDermotts Villas Housing Estate — the last verified record of his whereabouts.

A family member reported him missing ten days later, having not heard from him and grown concerned. Garda inquiries confirmed there had been no sightings of Duffy since that afternoon, his phone had not been used, and he had not left the country. Searches were conducted in Navan and along the River Boyne, but no trace of him was found.

Gardaí said the case has been under active investigation led by a Senior Investigating Officer based in Navan. Based on available information, the missing person investigation has now been formally reclassified as a murder investigation. Duffy's family was informed of the development today by gardaí and a dedicated family liaison officer.

Duffy is described as 5'8" in height, of broad build, with brown hair and blue eyes. At the time of his disappearance he walked with a noticeable limp. He was last seen wearing dark clothing with a cream hoodie underneath, the hood worn outside his jacket.
