The shooting occurred near mile marker 38 on I-65, close to the Buc-ee's travel centre. The Kentucky Transportation Cabinet set up a traffic detour at exit 30, with officials warning that the area would remain closed for at least two hours.

KSP is searching for a bluish gray Honda Civic bearing Alabama licence plate number TN018596, which was present at the scene at the time of the shooting.

A Blue Alert is a public emergency notification broadcast to mobile phones, radio stations and highway signs when a law enforcement officer has been killed, seriously injured or is missing in the line of duty. Under Department of Justice guidelines, the alert also signals that a suspect remains at large.
