Lincoln couple arrested after toddler found alone in parking lot

A couple in Lincoln, Nebraska has been arrested on suspicion of misdemeanor child abuse after their 2-year-old daughter was found wandering unattended in a parking lot, 1011now.com reports.

Police officers responded to the area of 24th and T Streets at around 7:15 p.m. on Friday following a report of a young child found alone outside an apartment complex. Officers spoke with residents at the complex and used social media to help identify the girl's family.

The parents, aged 28 and 32, did not return home until approximately two hours later. Investigators determined the couple had left the toddler and her 9-month-old brother unattended for roughly three hours. According to police, both children had been sleeping when the parents left to attend church and go shopping.

The Nebraska Department of Health and Human Services removed both children from the home following the incident.

Both parents were transported to Lancaster County Jail on suspicion of misdemeanor child abuse.
