Residents of Bathlodge are expressing fear and anxiety after a deadly late-night shooting on September 21 claimed the life of 20-year-old Saquania Anthony and left two others wounded, antigua.news reports.
"Bathlodge is not an area for crime. It's very quiet," one resident told Observer Media. "When it reach in a village like Bathlodge now, you say to yourself, this thing really get out of hand."
Police responded to the scene at approximately 11:30 p.m. and found Anthony unresponsive with what appeared to be multiple gunshot wounds. She was pronounced dead at around 1:58 a.m. on Tuesday. A 24-year-old man injured in the attack is in stable condition, while a 13-year-old boy remains in serious but stable condition.
Preliminary investigations indicate that three masked intruders forced their way into a residence where several people had gathered and fired multiple rounds.
Two men were arrested shortly after the shooting. Officers are continuing to search for a third individual believed to have been involved.
Despite the arrests, fear and uncertainty persist among those living in the area. One resident who said he knows Anthony's family described neighbours as deeply troubled and struggling to make sense of the violence.
"A lot of people are feeling troubled because people are seeking for answers and most people are clueless to what is going on," he said.
The same resident alleged that disputes and threats had emerged among young people he believed were connected to the incident. Police have not confirmed those claims and have not announced a motive.
Another resident voiced particular concern for the wounded teenager, describing him as "very innocent," and said the attack had heightened his fears for his own family's safety.
A third resident called for a broader response beyond policing, urging greater parental involvement and community guidance for young people.
"The youth and them, they really need some more parental guidance," he said. "This situation really needs a holistic approach. It really need some serious attention, from my personal point of view."
