A man accused of stabbing a neighbour in Havířov died on Thursday in a psychiatric facility from heart failure. The case will likely be shelved.
Havířov murder case to be shelved as suspect dies
The investigation into last year's murder of a woman in Havířov in the Karviná district will almost certainly be shelved. As confirmed by Moravian-Silesian police spokesperson Eva Michalíková and reported by Novinky.cz, the forty-four-year-old man suspected of the crime died on Thursday in a psychiatric facility where he had been placed immediately after the attack.
"The man who was suspected of the murder from last week in Havířov died on Thursday. Based on the results of the forensic autopsy, it was a natural death with no involvement of another person. Regional detectives continue to investigate the circumstances of this case and will most likely shelve it, as the suspect has died," Michalíková said.
According to Novinky.cz, it was heart failure.
The attack itself occurred on Saturday, 30 May, in an apartment building near the Community Centre on Dlouhá street in central Havířov. The forty-four-year-old man attacked a female neighbour approximately twenty years his senior, with long-standing neighbourly disputes allegedly being the motive.
"Police officers, upon arrival at the scene, immediately subdued and detained the attacker. They simultaneously provided first aid to the injured woman, and were later joined by paramedics. Unfortunately, the woman succumbed to her injuries at the scene," said spokesperson Soňa Štětínská earlier.
The man could not be thoroughly questioned due to his poor physical and mental condition. Tests for alcohol and drugs came back negative, although he had reportedly had mental health problems previously.
