A court in Olomouc sent a nineteen-year-old man to prison for a lengthy seventeen years in an institution with enhanced security. Last autumn in a village near Olomouc, he killed a friend who was ten years older with a knife.

The Regional Court in Olomouc on Thursday handed down a harsh verdict against nineteen-year-old Martin Vítek. The young man will serve 17 years for murder in an institution with enhanced security. He committed the crime on 29 September last year in the village of Dlouhá Loučka.
He attacked an acquaintance ten years his senior at night in an abandoned barn where the victim was living. He attacked him with a kitchen knife with a metal handle measuring over 33 centimetres. A wound to the neck proved fatal. Police found the body by chance the following morning, and the perpetrator was apprehended within seven hours.
The reason for the attack was an old grievance – the victim had assaulted the man physically a few days earlier. Vítek confessed to everything before the court, but showed complete indifference. "He attacked me, so I killed him. What else," he said with cold composure.
Forensic expert reports ruled out diminished responsibility. The defendant was fully aware of his actions. Senate chairman Jiří Barbořík stressed that the sentence reflected the perpetrator's life to date. In May of the same year, the district court in Olomouc had sentenced Vítek to 2.5 years in prison for robbery, a sentence that included an earlier conviction for theft. The young man also had experience with treatment for alcohol and substance abuse.
"He does not at all grasp the seriousness of his act. There is no chance whatsoever for reform," the judge explained the reasons for the harsh sentence. Up to twenty years was originally possible.
The verdict became legally binding immediately, as both sides waived the possibility of filing an appeal. Before the sentence was handed down, the defendant smiled and said only: "I send my regards home."
