Man arrested for verbally assaulting Jewish female passenger on Madrid Metro
Approximately two weeks ago, a young woman was travelling on the capital's underground system when she was subjected to a verbal assault by a stranger. The victim was wearing a religious symbol hanging from her neck that identified her as a member of the Jewish community. Upon noticing this, the man launched into a barrage of insults that continued for several stops, according to reporting by El Mundo.
The incident began with a comment about the shame that, according to the aggressor, should come with wearing that symbol. From that point on, the situation spiralled out of control. The man shouted expressions including "Jewish bitch", "damn Israel", "murderer" and "genocidal". The young woman, visibly distressed, decided to record the scene with her mobile phone to document what had occurred.
None of the other passengers in the carriage intervened to stop the situation. Most chose to look away or pretend ignorance of what was happening just metres away.
When the train arrived at the affected woman's destination station, she quickly left the carriage and went to a police station to file the corresponding complaint. The trauma from the incident subsequently caused her an anxiety attack that required medical attention.
Following the relevant investigations, officers managed to identify the alleged perpetrator of the incident and proceeded with his arrest.
