A man was shot in the back of the head at close range on Wednesday, 10 June in the heart of Barcelona. The victim, a Serbian national, collapsed in front of a police station. About ten people queuing at the post witnessed the scene.
The assailant fled in the direction of the Sagrada Familia before disposing of his weapon, his phone and his bicycle helmet under a bench at a bus stop. He was wearing neither gloves nor a mask and appeared indifferent to the surveillance cameras that recorded everything.
Identifying the body proved particularly difficult because the man had been using false passports. Finally, his fingerprints made it possible to establish his identity. According to DHNET, the deceased held a senior position within a Balkans cartel that maintained close links with criminal organisations active in Belgium.
An international arrest warrant had been issued against him at the request of the Belgian authorities. He was being pursued for his alleged involvement in a vast cocaine trafficking operation that passed through the port of Antwerp. Belgian investigators had managed to locate him thanks to the decryption of an encrypted messaging application.
Catalan police are actively searching for the shooter. His photograph has been transmitted to numerous international police services.
