Weapons arsenal and 120 kilos of cocaine seized in Málaga after months of investigation
National Police officers seized a weapons arsenal in Málaga province and arrested four members of a network engaged in arms and drug trafficking, according to eldiario.ec. The operation, carried out by the Drugs and Organised Crime Unit (UDYCO) Costa del Sol of the Provincial Police Station in Málaga, was declared confidential and was directed by the Civil and Instruction Section of the First Instance Court of Vélez-Málaga.
The investigation began in May, when officers from the Special Operations and Security Group (GOES) and the Air Resources Unit intercepted a vehicle driven by a man transporting six automatic rifles, three hand grenades, magazines and numerous cartridges. The driver was arrested and remanded in custody.
Criminal network identified following initial arrest
Following that initial arrest, investigative procedures enabled officers to identify an organised criminal structure, whose members are described by investigators as highly specialised in arms and narcotics trafficking.
Last Monday, UDYCO Costa del Sol officers intercepted a vehicle transporting 120 kilograms of cocaine. The operation resulted in the arrest of two further people linked to the same network. Shortly afterwards, as part of the same operation, a fourth member of the criminal organisation was arrested.
Searches in various municipalities reveal the scale of the arsenal
As a result of the arrests, officers conducted searches and raids in various municipalities in Málaga province. The results revealed the true scale of the operation: 30 assault rifles, 11 hand grenades, 11 pistols, 7 silencers, 8 bulletproof vests and two ballistic plates designed to withstand military ammunition were found, in addition to more than five thousand cartridges of various calibres.
In the same searches, narcotics were also located: 60 kilograms of hashish, 3,000 ecstasy tablets and 650 grams of tusi.
In total, the operation resulted in the seizure of 36 rifles, 11 handguns, 11 hand grenades and abundant ammunition, amongst other items.
The investigation is being pursued by the Public Prosecutor's Office and is being directed judicially by the Civil and Instruction Section of the First Instance Court of Vélez-Málaga, Plaza nº 4.
