Pamplona Municipal Police have detained a 31-year-old man as the suspected perpetrator of the assault suffered by the city's former mayor Enrique Maya, of the UPN party, according to noticiasdenavarra.com.
Sources from the police force confirmed the arrest to news agency EFE and indicated that the detainee will be placed at the disposal of the courts in the coming hours, depending on the progress of the investigation.
The incident occurred on 9 June on Estafeta street in Pamplona. A passer-by first insulted Maya and immediately afterwards struck him in the chest. The former mayor did not suffer injuries as a result of the incident, although he filed a complaint.
Following the incident becoming public, representatives from various political formations and institutions expressed their condemnation on social media and their solidarity with Maya. Among them were the current mayor of Pamplona, Joseba Asiron, from EH Bildu, and the president of Navarre, María Chivite. The UPN, PSN, Geroa Bai, PPN and Contigo-Zurekin parties also conveyed their disapproval of the incident.
