The Guardia Civil of Cádiz is investigating the death of two brothers whose bodies were found inside their home in Estella del Marqués, a district of Jerez de la Frontera, according to El País. The deceased were aged 57 and 59, and the discovery was made late on Monday.
Both presented knife wounds, although with no apparent signs of struggle. The condition of the bodies indicated that the incident had occurred days before the discovery. The autopsy, scheduled for Tuesday, should determine the exact time of death, according to sources from the investigation cited by El País.
It was a third brother who alerted the authorities after going a long time without hearing from the deceased. Officers accessed the home after arriving at the location and discovered the bodies of both relatives.
Investigators are keeping several lines of enquiry open. One of the hypotheses gaining the most weight, according to sources close to the case, is that one of the brothers killed the other and then took his own life. One of the deceased had psychiatric records for schizophrenia, according to information released by the Efe agency.
The district mayor of Estella, Ricardo Sánchez, expressed "condolences and affection" to the relatives of the deceased and declared two days of official mourning. In a statement released on the council's social media accounts, Sánchez requested "maximum respect" towards the family.
Estella del Marqués is an autonomous local entity of Jerez de la Frontera with approximately 1,600 registered inhabitants, located 5.5 kilometres by road from the urban centre. The district was founded in 1950 by settlers from Jerez and El Puerto de Santa María.
