Former Spanish Prime Minister Zapatero appears before judge in corruption case
Spain's former Prime Minister, José Luis Rodríguez Zapatero, appears today before a judge at the National Court to answer questions about a wide-ranging corruption case. The statement centres on suspicions that the former prime minister was involved in the rescue plan for airline Plus Ultra.
The company, which operates flights between Spain and South America, is suspected of receiving 54 million euros in funds intended for the fight against the covid-19 pandemic. This is the first time Zapatero has appeared before the judiciary since an investigation was opened against him for suspected money laundering and financial misconduct.
The former Socialist Party leader has denied the alleged crimes. According to his account, jewellery valued at over one million euros that was found in a safe deposit box is a gift.
Zapatero, aged 65, served as Spanish Prime Minister between 2004 and 2011.
