A Valladolid court has handed down a 34-month sentence against a soldier born in the Dominican Republic who remains in pre-trial detention on suspicion of homicide committed in Viana de Cega. The new ruling penalises conduct involving control, intimidation and mistreatment of a former girlfriend.
The judge of criminal court number 2 rejected the defence's argument about undue delays in the proceedings, finding that the duration of the case was due to circumstances beyond the Administration's control, according to ABC.
Between April and October 2024, whilst their romantic relationship lasted, the serviceman developed a pattern of subjugation towards the woman. He demanded to know her whereabouts at all times, requested the passwords to her Internet accounts and sent her threatening messages repeatedly.
In one specific incident, after suspecting she had contacted a former colleague, he confined her to the house for hours, took her mobile phone and subjected her to verbal humiliation. On another occasion, he followed her to her workplace to monitor her.
The sentence breaks down into 20 months for coercion, one year for assault in a context of gender-based violence and two additional months for harassment. In addition to the deprivation of liberty, he must pay 1,440 euros in fines and maintain a minimum distance from his former partner for three years.
The same individual was remanded in custody on 14 January following the alleged stabbing death of a Viana de Cega resident. The motive for the attack was reportedly jealousy, as the defendant believed the victim was in a relationship with his ex-girlfriend. That case remains open.
