Anti-drug operation in O Salnés ends with one death and 15 arrests

A 31-year-old man, identified as Jonathan, died on Tuesday in Cambados, Pontevedra, after being shot during an anti-drug operation by the National Police, according to lasexta.com. The wounded man was taken to Hospital do Salnés with a bullet lodged in his shoulder and died shortly after admission to casualty, as confirmed by the Galician Health Service.

The incident took place around 06:30 hours, when officers from Group II of the National Police's Drugs and Organised Crime Unit (Udyco) in Pontevedra were executing a court-ordered search warrant at a property in the locality of Corvillón, in the municipality of Cambados. At that moment an exchange of gunfire occurred.

The victim's partner offers an account that contradicts the initial police investigation findings. "He got up, like to see what had happened. He looked through the door and they already shot him," she said. According to her, Jonathan was "unarmed, practically naked", and they were both asleep when officers knocked down the door.

However, initial information from the investigation suggests that it was the deceased who opened fire, initiating the shooting with the police.

The family's solicitor demands that footage from the officers' body cameras be provided. "I hope footage from the police cameras appears, the ones the police officers carry when they conduct this type of operation and which normally record everything," he said. The solicitor described the events directly: "This is clearly a homicide", and announced that the family would take legal action to establish responsibility.

The operation, declared secret and still ongoing, extended across several municipalities in the Pontevedra region of O Salnés: Vilagarcía de Arousa, Vilanova de Arousa, Cambados and Ribadumia. Across the entire operation, in which the Civil Guard also collaborated, 15 arrests were made.

The investigation of the incident has been taken over by the Civil Guard. The National Police, for its part, has so far provided no information about the shooting. Residents of the area expressed dismay at what occurred during a planned police search.
