Officers from the Municipal Police have arrested a 31-year-old man accused of attacking Enrique Maya, the former mayor of Pamplona. The arrest took place on Tuesday and the detainee will be brought before the judicial authorities in the coming hours, according to sources from the police force confirmed to Naiz.
The incident dates from 9 June, when Maya, a member of UPN, was walking along Estafeta Street in the old town. A passer-by spat on the ground, directed the phrase "you disgust me" at him and then punched him in the chest. The former councillor sustained no serious injuries but filed a complaint about the assault.
Following news of the incident, multiple political forces and institutions expressed their condemnation of the episode and their support for the victim. Among those who made statements were current mayor Joseba Asiron, from EH Bildu, and the president of the Government of Navarre, María Chivite. Representatives from UPN, PSN, Geroa Bai, PPN and Contigo-Zurekin also joined in.
The president of UPN, Cristina Ibarrola, linked the attack to EH Bildu, stating that "this is what happens when violence is justified and even encouraged from the institutions". Ibarrola alluded to statements made by Laura Aznal, an EH Bildu deputy, who described an operation with 28 arrests for disturbances linked to the arrival of Vito Quiles as "disproportionate".
