Shooting near Paris – investigators describe it as a terrorist attack
Following a series of shootings in the Paris region, Interior Minister Laurent Nuñez has explicitly described it as a "terrorist act". The investigation is still ongoing, but it is "clearly a terrorist crime", Nuñez declared on Friday morning in Trappes to journalists.
A 39-year-old opened fire multiple times from a moving car around 10.30 a.m. In the Yvelines department, west of Paris, the man shot at a petrol station, a medical centre, a nursery school and a playground. One person was killed, four others injured – including a twelve-year-old girl. The shooter subsequently drove to the neighbouring municipality of La Verrière before police arrested him.
The mayor of Trappes, Ali Rabeh, described the conduct as "apparently indiscriminate" and suspected the intention of a "massacre". The authorities are investigating for "murder in connection with a terrorist association" and are simultaneously examining a possible racist background. The suspect was previously unknown to authorities. In the afternoon, investigators searched his house.
