Shooting from vehicle in Paris suburb claims life

RTV SLO reports that in the French town of Trappes, approximately 25 kilometres from central Paris, a 39-year-old man fired shots from a vehicle at passers-by. One person died and four were wounded – among them a 12-year-old child. Paramedics attended the scene of the incident, and police warned that the number of victims could increase.

"Someone shot from their vehicle at several people who were in their path in Trappes and La Verrière," wrote Trappes mayor Ali Rabeh on social media. Police confirmed his statement and added that the suspect was arrested shortly after the shooting in the nearby town of Coignieres.

The incident, which occurred in the morning in the Yvelines department, was also confirmed by Prime Minister Sebastien Lecornu. He wrote on the X network that it is a "serious incident" and that "all resources are fully mobilised". Lecornu stressed that the matter is being monitored by the national counter-terrorism prosecutor's office.

French news agency AFP later reported that the prosecutor's office is investigating the shooting as a potential terrorist attack.

The incident occurred amid tense circumstances in France, where authorities are anticipating new protests on Saturday. Following a first wave of mass protests against austerity, which were accompanied by unrest in Paris and elsewhere across the country, clashes with police, looting and arson, authorities announced increased police presence for this weekend. Only demonstrations organised by trade unions will be permitted.
