A fire broke out in a ward on the first floor of Sismanogleio Hospital in the early hours of Thursday. A 76-year-old man who was being treated in the same space was arrested as the person responsible.
Initially, the elderly man denied any involvement in the incident. However, during an investigation by the Directorate for Combating Arson Crimes, he confessed to his involvement. According to his account, he used a lighter that he had in his possession to set fire to his bed mattress.
Immediately after the fire broke out, the 76-year-old left the medical facility. He travelled by city bus to his residence in Nea Filadelfia, where he was located by the prosecuting authorities. His absence from the hospital was noticed during the process of recording the patients following the incident.
During interrogation, the arrested man cited various reasons for his behaviour. He argued, among other things, that he felt marginalised and that he had experienced difficulties adapting to the hospital environment.
The competent prosecutor has been informed of the case. The elderly man is to be presented before the courts. In the meantime, his wife submitted a request for a psychiatric assessment of his condition.
