Fraudsters stole over €40,000 from elderly mother of lawyer
An elderly woman, the mother of prominent lawyer Evita Varela, became the target of criminals who managed to obtain more than €40,000 in cash and valuable items from her.
The incident occurred when the woman was returning from shopping. A man and a woman approached her, addressing her by her pet name. The two strangers claimed that her daughter was entitled to a cash refund of €16,000, but that a payment was required in order for it to be issued.
The elderly woman, intending to help her daughter, initially gave €1,600. The perpetrators created a false sense of urgency, saying that they had to complete the transaction before the financial institution closed. They then asked if there was more money at the house and drove her there.
Inside the house, the woman of the couple kept the elderly woman occupied, while her partner searched the premises. From there they removed €20,000 in cash as well as jewellery valued at €20,000. The total cost of the fraud amounts to €41,600.
The lawyer has already taken legal action to locate and apprehend those responsible.
