An investigation is underway into the serious injury of a 20-year-old young man who sustained gunshot wounds to the head from members of law enforcement during a pursuit in the city of Argos.
The incident began when OEPKE officers attempted to stop a vehicle in the area. The driver did not comply with the instructions and initiated a pursuit that lasted approximately 35 minutes across various locations in the city. During the pursuit, the young man attempted to strike both the police vehicles and the officers themselves.
At the location where the suspect was ultimately immobilised, investigators found at least 13 cartridge casings. The two uniformed officers claimed that the shots were fired upwards and from a distance that did not allow them to have visual contact with the fugitive. Laboratory analysis is expected to establish the exact distance, the direction of fire, and whether there was ricochet.
The injured man was initially taken to the local hospital and subsequently, due to the severity of his condition, to the Emergency Department of Thriasio. There he underwent surgery and is now hospitalised on a ventilator in the intensive care unit of KAT. According to the head of POEDHN, the patient is not in brain death, as had been reported, but his condition remains extremely critical.
An air rifle replica was also found at the scene of the incident, which was sent for examination to the forensic laboratories. The two police officers were arrested in flagrante delicto and are facing charges of attempted homicide with possible malice aforethought, whilst they were given a deadline to present their defence.
