Police investigators are examining evidence of deliberate tampering at the crime scene, seven days after the double murder in Aigion.
Specialist team re-examines crime scene in Aigion
Authorities are investigating indications that an organised effort was made to destroy evidence following the double murder in Aigion, according to police sources cited by ERT. Seven days after the crime, a specialist unit from the Directorate of Criminal Investigations returned to the crime scene with specialised equipment to detect erased material.
At the centre of the investigation are cleaning products, objects that were not found during the initial search, and potentially destroyed evidence. The key question that police officers are tasked with answering is whether there was indeed deliberate tampering with the scene and who would have had an interest in altering the picture. In parallel, investigations continue in fields in the surrounding area for the broken mobile telephone of the 54-year-old victim, as well as for biological material or objects that would strengthen the theory.
The first police officers who entered the house found a scene inconsistent with the severity of the crime: a strong smell of cleaning products, whilst neither a broom nor a mop was found. This discovery immediately aroused the suspicions of investigators. The possibility is also being examined that the perpetrator's bloodstained clothing disappeared before the authorities arrived.
Expected to be important for uncovering the truth is the statement of the friend of the 65-year-old Italian suspect — the person who arrived first at the room where the two bodies were found. This is the couple's neighbour, who received a telephone call from the 65-year-old Italian in the early hours of Tuesday, 9 June 2026. The neighbour rushed to the house immediately, where he found the mother and son dead and the Italian in a state of shock. The 65-year-old stated then that he did not know what had happened, and the neighbour notified the police.
The 65-year-old Italian remains in pre-trial detention and continues to deny any involvement. Through his lawyers he is requesting that the medical files of the two victims be examined as well.
