Bullets from a 9-millimetre pistol claimed the life of a young man on Saturday night in the narrow streets of Exarcheia, in Athens. The victim, according to Newsbeast, was 25 years old and was from neighbouring Turkey.
The unfortunate man had arrived in Greek territory in November 2024 and had been residing in the country since then. Initial reports had presented him as 35 years old, but his identification showed that he was considerably younger.
The incident took place on the steps leading to Strefi Hill. Gunshots were heard by locals, who notified the authorities. The killer fled immediately towards the hill, leaving behind five empty cartridges.
Strong police forces rushed to the scene and cordoned off the area. The young man had sustained shots to the head and chest. His body was discovered by the first responders to arrive.
The victim's background was not clear. He had previously been arrested twice by Greek authorities, once in Volos and once in the capital. Neighbours in Exarcheia knew him well, as he appeared frequently in the area accompanied by his dog.
A shocking image captured at the crime scene was the presence of his four-legged companion. The animal was lying next to his master's body, nestled beneath his hand. When police officers and EKAB rescue workers arrived, the dog remained there in a state of shock, unwilling to leave despite the efforts of those present.
What exactly led to the murder remains unclear. However, the victim's origin has directed the attention of investigators towards criminal organisations operating in the neighbouring country that have extended their activities beyond the borders. Authorities are investigating whether the act is part of a broader settling of accounts between rival groups.
