Armed attack leaves 35-year-old dead in Exarcheia
A 35-year-old man, originally from an Arab country, was killed following gunshots that occurred near the intersection of Kallidromio and Emmanuel Benaki streets, in a busy neighbourhood of central Athens.
The body was found on stairs in the area. His death resulted from injuries caused by bullets to the head. Residents of the area reported hearing gunshots, a fact that prompted security authorities to immediately proceed to the scene.
From the initial examination of the crime scene, officers estimate that the weapon used was a nine-millimetre pistol. Five cartridges were found, which will be sent for laboratory analysis to determine whether they correspond to a known weapon.
The possibility that the act is related to drug trafficking is being examined by prosecuting authorities. Police officers handling the case believe the victim may have been pursued by one or more gunmen before being shot dead.
The investigation is being directed by the service dealing with organised crime. Efforts to locate and apprehend those responsible are continuing.
