Alexandros Giotopoulos Returns to Prison
The country's highest court has decided to overturn the recent release of the multiple-life-sentenced prisoner convicted in connection with the activities of the 17 November terrorist organisation. Alexandros Giotopoulos, who had been freed from prison on 21 May 2026 under restrictive conditions, is to be returned behind bars.
This development resulted from a ruling by the judicial council of the Court of Cassation, which accepted a submission from the prosecutor general Sofoklis Logotheti. The chief prosecutor had expressed his disagreement with the appeals court's decision, arguing that the law did not ensure either the formal or substantive conditions for conditional release of the inmate.
Giotopoulos had been found guilty of 17 life sentences and an additional 25-year sentence as a leading member of the organisation. After 24 years in confinement, the Piraeus Court of Appeals had decided to grant him conditional freedom, with conditions including a ban on leaving the country, mandatory reporting to the local police station, and remaining at his residence in Vyronas.
The new court ruling effectively reinstates the initial ruling of the Misdemeanour Court Council, which had rejected release. The convicted prisoner is now expected to return to prison immediately, whilst his application will be re-examined by a different composition of the Piraeus Court of Appeals.
