The man who rented the house of 45-year-old Stavroula Leventaki in Chania has now become the main focus of the police investigation, twenty days after the woman went missing. According to reports, he is believed to be the last person to have had contact with her before she vanished.
The tenant, originally from Skopje, was called in for questioning three times. Officers are examining material from surveillance cameras, witness statements and other evidence that could shed light on the fate of the missing woman.
According to his account, Leventaki visited him at the property, photographed the spaces and confided in him difficulties in her relationships with her parents. He claims the meeting took place on Friday, while the investigating authorities believe it took place on Saturday, 30 May, the day the woman disappeared.
Her phone fell silent shortly after five o'clock in the afternoon that Saturday. Since then, no one has had any information about where she is. The tenant disappeared yesterday afternoon, leaving his vehicle approximately five to six kilometres away from the house with his mobile phone switched on.
Several aspects of the case are raising questions for investigators. Why did he initially conceal the Saturday meeting? Why did he delete the material from the property's cameras? Why do the witness accounts regarding the eggs the woman was carrying not match his version?
Meanwhile, video that came to light shows the missing woman's brother speaking negatively about her, while he himself was hospitalised on the day of her disappearance.
