Police authorities in Crete are now seriously examining the possibility of criminal activity in the case of a 45-year-old woman who has been missing for twenty days in Chania. Recent findings have directed the investigation towards the man who rented her house.
According to reports by Reader.gr, the 43-year-old tenant had disappeared in recent days, leaving personal belongings behind. Authorities quickly located him and arrested him.
A former police union spokesperson, speaking on a television programme, described how authorities managed to change the direction of the investigation. Initially the case was handled as a simple disappearance, but police conducted a thorough search of the house where the woman was last seen. There they found material that was sent to forensic laboratories for further analysis.
He noted that the main suspect realised that authorities were monitoring him closely. Following multiple examinations by authorities, he decided to disappear, abandoning his mobile phone and his vehicle. He attempted to hide in a different car, but police had surrounded him and arrested him immediately. His arrest also occurred in connection with a case relating to cannabis plants in a space he used.
The former spokesperson estimated that within the day a court warrant could be issued for manslaughter. He noted that within approximately twenty days authorities had managed to gather sufficient evidence that changed the direction of the case.
Legal representative Katerina Fragkaki stressed that the issuance of a warrant without the body being found indicates the existence of strong evidence. As she pointed out, the fact of the disappearance alone is not sufficient; proof is required.
The former spokesperson stressed that the motive for the act remains under investigation. He also recalled the presumption of innocence, noting that the suspect has not yet been charged with murder, despite the findings that strengthen the suspicions of the authorities.
