Police authorities in Chania arrested a 43-year-old man from North Macedonia who had been renting the apartment of 45-year-old Stavrula Leventaki, who has been missing for weeks.

A 43-year-old man from North Macedonia, who had rented the residence of missing Stavrula Leventaki, was taken into custody at Chania police headquarters from Friday evening. The 45-year-old woman has been missing for several weeks, with investigations intensifying.
Police officers from the Chania Crimes Subdivision proceeded with the arrest following methodical operations. From the foreigner's second statement to authorities, investigators suspected he was withholding information. They called him in again, offering him coffee in an attempt to get him to talk.
When the suspect realised that authorities had found significant items inside the house, he attempted to flee. However, police had set up a cordon around the area and left no room for escape. The man hid inside a vehicle, where he was located. Authorities surrounded the vehicle for approximately half an hour, waiting for the suspect to complete a telephone call in order to gather information.
After his arrest, the 43-year-old was taken to police headquarters. His detention allows authorities to continue interrogations. Several small traces of blood were found in Leventaki's house on the television and in the living room, with one of them appearing to have been hastily wiped. The sponge that was possibly used was sent for examination. Blood traces inside the suspect's vehicle are also being examined.
According to information, police also discovered cannabis plants in a space used by the suspect. Authorities believe the available evidence points to a criminal act against the 45-year-old. Their objective is to obtain information about the location of the body. If sufficient evidence emerges, a warrant will be sought for homicide.
The 43-year-old, in a television interview, claimed that he is receiving threats to his life. He asserted that an armed man broke into his house and warned him not to speak, whilst linking the events to financial disputes over property matters concerning the missing woman's family.
The case remains under investigation.
