A 43-year-old man who rented an apartment from a 45-year-old woman has been placed in custody on Friday evening in Chania. The woman, Stavrula Leventaki, has been missing in recent days and the case is being investigated by the city's Crime Division.
According to Documento, police officers discovered red marks in two different locations inside the suspect's home. Additionally, stains found on the television set are likely to have originated from the blood of the missing woman. Officers also seized the suspect's floor cleaning tool, examining the possibility that an attempt was made to erase traces.
The arrest came following a methodical approach by prosecuting authorities. The 43-year-old had been called to the Police Headquarters repeatedly to provide additional statements. Authorities attempted to build an atmosphere of trust, hoping he would reveal more about where Stavrula is located. The suspect, however, is reported to have kept his cards close to his chest.
During the lengthy statements, police officers monitored his vehicle from a distance for approximately thirty minutes. They did not intervene immediately, as they heard him talking on his mobile phone and waited for him to finish. When the man realised that authorities had discovered evidence inside the missing woman's apartment, he attempted to flee. He did not succeed. Shortly afterwards, his vehicle was located.
The arrest was made within the framework of the flagrant offence procedure, as searches revealed cannabis plants in a space he used. He himself claims that he is being pressured by unknown persons not to speak about the case. He states that someone broke into his home armed and asked him to remain silent, and he links the threats to financial disputes regarding property matters of the missing woman.
The search for the 45-year-old woman continues with undiminished intensity.
