Chania: 43-year-old North Macedonian arrested over disappearance of Stavroula Leventaki
Police authorities in Chania have proceeded with the arrest of a 43-year-old man, a North Macedonian citizen, who is being examined as the main suspect in the case of the disappearance of 45-year-old Stavroula Leventaki. His detention came after an all-night interrogation and intensive investigation into homicide.
The suspect, who had rented a property in the area, was the key person in the investigation from the outset. During a thorough inspection of the flat, officers found a significant amount of blood inside a sponge that was located in the space. This finding was considered particularly serious and was forwarded immediately for laboratory analysis.
According to information, the 43-year-old had already been called multiple times to testify before the authorities, whilst his behaviour had raised questions from the beginning of the investigation. In recent times, the 45-year-old woman had visited the house rented by the suspect, with the authorities investigating whether this visit is directly connected to her disappearance.
The family of the missing woman expressed fears for her life from the outset. Her brother, Giannis Leventaki, had publicly stated that he believes his sister is no longer alive and that the tenant knows exactly what happened.
Police officers are continuing investigations on multiple fronts. They have collected material from security cameras in the area and are examining testimony that may shed light on the fate of the 45-year-old. At the same time, investigations are being conducted in outdoor spaces, as well as checks on electronic traces and communications of the suspect.
The case has shocked the local community of Chania and has received widespread publicity at the national level. The authorities have not yet made official announcements about whether the investigation has led to the discovery of a body or to full clarification of the circumstances of the disappearance.
