The funeral of the 45-year-old police officer was held in a climate of deep sorrow at the Holy Church of Saint Demetrius in Kato Nevrokopi, Drama, according to reports from Ta Nea. The woman lost her life from seven stab wounds inflicted by her 50-year-old husband, also a police officer, who subsequently took his own life. At the same time, the funeral of the perpetrator was scheduled in Koudounia, Drama.
The couple had been separated in recent months, having decided to go their separate ways after approximately twenty years of life together. The 50-year-old reportedly did not accept the separation. According to initial findings of the investigation, he attacked the woman from behind with an iron bar and then stabbed her repeatedly, leaving her bleeding on the floor.
The tragic face of the case remains their 16-year-old son, who found himself confronted with the horrific sight within their own home. The crime unfolded in front of the minor child. Police officers, colleagues of the victims, rushed to the scene and found the woman unconscious. A short time later, the perpetrator was found dead inside his car in a mountainous area of Drama, having used his service weapon.
The family tragedy leaves behind two children: the 16-year-old son and a 20-year-old daughter, a law school student in Komotini. According to information from Mega, both children are in their mother's family environment.
"He threatened her with a gun while she slept"
The uncle of 45-year-old Antigone publicly accused the 50-year-old perpetrator of having threatened her with a gun two weeks before the murder, while she slept. "She ran and went to her sister. She should have gone to the police," he told journalists. Adding "he pinned her while she slept," he appealed to all women: "Report them."
The Police Spokesperson on the case
Konstantia Dimoglidu, the spokesperson for the Hellenic Police, spoke about the case on the "Koinonia Ora MEGA" programme. She noted that a friend of the victim had spoken about psychological abuse in the relationship, which "leaves no marks and often neither the victim notices it." She reached the same conclusion that is repeated in similar cases: "Usually someone knows or suspects that something is happening."
Dimoglidu clarified that the two police officers did not serve in the same department and neither of the two belonged to a domestic violence unit. "Both had given no cause for concern, even as regards their work performance," she stated, emphasising that nothing had been reported to any supervisor.
According to the spokesperson, the perpetrator had privately consulted a psychologist who also works with the Police. However, it had not been established that there was a danger to the life of a third party — in the opposite case, as Dimoglidu emphasised, the Police would have been informed immediately. "At some point it appears he was also referred to a psychiatrist," she concluded.
