The Crete Organised Crime Countermeasures Department has dismantled a network engaged in distributing illegal subscription television. A case file has been formed against 83 individuals, with financial gains estimated at no less than €7 million.

In Heraklion, Crete, the Organised Crime Countermeasures Department uncovered and dissolved a large group that sold illegal access to subscription television channels. Members of the group used advanced technologies to attract buyers and hide from authorities.
The case file that was formed concerns 83 people. Seven of them are in custody, whilst another 76 held different roles in the operation of the criminal structure. Information from police indicates that the group had strict confidentiality rules and carefully examined each prospective customer before accepting them.
Those involved had methods to quickly erase their digital footprints in case of danger. Nevertheless, this tactic did not help them. During investigations, a list containing more than 86,000 names was found, as well as messages with prospective buyers regarding the installation and use of the illegal devices.
The money collected by the perpetrators moved through complex routes across many countries so they would not be detected. The prosecuting authorities identified 58 accounts in ten different countries. The profits allegedly acquired by the group are estimated at no less than €7 million, whilst legitimate companies in the sector suffered losses estimated at more than €50 million.
The use of advanced equipment, the continuous updating of programmes and the provision of substantial sums for technical support and maintenance demonstrate an operation without precedent in the country.
