New prosecutions for fatal amusement park accident in Chalkidiki
Following the death of a 19-year-old in August 2024 at an amusement park in Chalkidiki, the deputy prosecutor of the Court of Appeal in Thessaloniki ordered criminal prosecutions against seven persons. The charges they face concern manslaughter by negligence.
The prosecuted individuals include the former mayor of Kassandra Anastasia Halkia, two former deputy mayors, two heads of municipal services and two engineers. The victim's father had filed a complaint against them, alleging that their omissions regarding the safety of the installation led to the death of his child.
Initially, the Prosecutor's Office of the Misdemeanour Court of Chalkidiki had rejected the complaint, determining that there was no direct connection between the omissions and the death. The father's appeal was, however, accepted by the superior prosecutor, who after a preliminary investigation requested that prosecution be brought.
It is recalled that the Mixed Jury Court of Giannitsa had sentenced the owner of the business to life imprisonment, his wife to nine years, the operator of the ride to six years and the engineer to thirteen years imprisonment. The new trial for the seven prosecuted individuals has been scheduled for the end of the year.
