Shooting in Argos: 20-year-old in brain death following pursuit

Brain death for the 20-year-old shot in Argos
The 20-year-old shot by police in the early hours of Wednesday, 8 July 2026 in Argos is in a state of brain death, according to information from Newsit.gr.
Thriassio Hospital announced that the young man, approximately 25 years old and with unknown personal details, was brought to the emergency department intubated with dilated pupils and a gunshot wound to the head. "He was immediately taken to surgery and remains in the neurosurgery ward awaiting transfer to an intensive care bed. He is in a state of brain death," the hospital stated in an informal briefing.
According to sources from iatropedia.gr, doctors made every effort to keep the 20-year-old alive, subjecting him to surgery with the aim of removing the bullet from his head — something that proved impossible. Subsequently, brain death was confirmed, whilst the relevant certification tests continue.
What preceded the pursuit
Police initially attempted to stop the driver's vehicle for inspection. The driver ignored their signals and accelerated to escape. During his flight, he allegedly attempted to strike police officers who were outside their patrol vehicles, whilst repeatedly colliding with police cars.
The pursuit ended when the vehicle was immobilised. The driver abandoned his car and attempted to flee on foot by climbing over a brick wall. An ambulance from EKAB initially transported him to Argos Hospital and subsequently to a hospital in Attica.
Air-powered weapon and arrest of police officers
During the subsequent investigation, police located and seized an air-powered pistol at a location near where the initial inspection signal had been given. The weapon will be sent to the Forensic Investigation Directorate for laboratory examination.
The competent prosecutor was immediately informed of the case. As part of the flagrante delicto procedure, the two police officers who used their service weapons were arrested.
