Arrest of ATM gang leader – loot exceeding 440,000 euros in 9 explosions
A senior member of a criminal organisation that blew up ATMs was arrested yesterday, Tuesday. The gang operated from February 2025 with total illicit proceeds exceeding 440,000 euros.
Arrests over ATM explosion gang – nine cases solved
Officials from the Organised Crime Directorate (ΔΑΟΕ) have arrested a leading member of a criminal organisation allegedly carrying out vehicle thefts and ATM raids using explosives in multiple areas across the country, according to the Newspaper of Editors.
The arrest was made on Tuesday afternoon following an organised operation by the Property Crimes Division, alongside targeted searches of a residence and other locations used by the accused.
Months-long investigation and arrest warrant
An extensive police investigation preceded the arrest, which established that the organisation had been active at least since February 2025. The findings were submitted to the competent prosecutorial authority, which issued an arrest warrant against the gang leader.
The accused faced charges including formation of a criminal organisation, attempted homicide, aggravated thefts, explosions in concert with others, violations of legislation concerning explosives and weapons, forgery, dangerous driving and damage to others' property.
Counter-surveillance measures and advanced equipment
Members of the gang allegedly systematically avoided using mobile phones when planning and executing their operations. They used specialist vehicle-breaching equipment, means of concealing their identifying features and equipment that prevented the discovery of biological and other traces.
The leader transmitted his experience and expertise to other members, ensuring the smooth execution of criminal acts.
Gunfire against ΟΠΚΕ police officers
In July 2025, following an ATM explosion in the Argolida area, members of the organisation opened fire on ΟΠΚΕ police officers in an attempt to escape.
Nine explosions, three vehicle thefts
To date, nine cases of ATM explosions have been solved – two of which at the attempted level – as well as three vehicle thefts, two thefts of registration plates, one theft of fire extinguishers and one theft of a toll booth transceiver. The total illicit financial gain of the organisation is estimated to exceed 440,000 euros.
The accused, who has previously involved the authorities in similar offences, was brought before the competent prosecutor and referred to formal investigation. The investigation continues for the identification and location of other individuals involved.
