Arrest of gang leader for ATM explosions and car thefts
Officials from the Organised Crime Combating Directorate have arrested one of the leading members of a gang that had developed extensive illegal activity across multiple regions of Greece. The individual was involved in attacks using explosives against automated teller machines, as well as cases of vehicle theft.
The operation was carried out on the evening of Tuesday, 7 July 2026, by police officers from the Property Crime Subdirectorate. Special Teams from the Organised Crime Combating Directorate also participated in the operation, and searches were conducted at a house and other premises used by the perpetrator.
An arrest warrant had been issued against him for a series of serious offences. Specifically, he is accused of establishment and participation in a criminal organisation, attempted murder, thefts with particular characteristics, explosions, violation of laws concerning explosive materials, forgery, non-compliance with court orders, dangerous driving, damage to third-party property, and violation of weapons legislation.
The investigation of the case had begun long before, with officers utilising electronic evidence and information from the preliminary examination. Through this analysis, the authorities were able to identify the group's activities, which appear to have begun at least from February 2025, with attacks on cash machines in various areas.
The investigation was completed following months of detailed and thorough examination by the prosecuting authorities.
