Telephone fraud in Serres: jewellery worth €2,000 stolen from elderly woman
A Greek man has been identified in connection with a telephone fraud case targeting an elderly woman in Serres on 20 May 2026. The perpetrators stole jewellery worth €2,000 by impersonating tax office employees.
Fraud using tax office pretext — elderly woman loses €2,000 in jewellery in Serres
Jewellery worth €2,000 was stolen from an elderly woman by unknown perpetrators in Serres on 20 May 2026, using the classic telephone fraud method. According to ERT, the case was solved following a methodical investigation by officers from the Herakleia Police Department.
One of the perpetrators called the victim impersonating a tax office employee. He claimed that the jewellery the victim had at home needed to be handed over to an alleged assistant for photographing and recording purposes. In this manner, the elderly woman was deceived and handed over the items to the caller's accomplice.
A case file was opened against a Greek man, whose details have already been identified. The case file will be submitted to the prosecutor of the Serres District Court. The police investigation is continuing to determine the identity of the accomplice, as well as to examine their possible involvement in other similar cases.
Meanwhile, the General Regional Police Directorate of Central Macedonia is issuing recommendations to citizens to avoid similar incidents:
- Do not trust unknown callers impersonating various official capacities.
- Do not disclose whether you keep money, jewellery or valuable items at home.
- Report to the police even in the event of attempted fraud.
