Thessaloniki: Arrest and charges filed for environmental pollution
Police officers from the Environmental Protection Department arrested a 46-year-old and filed charges against two others for breaching environmental protection legislation.

Officers from the Directorate of Crime Prosecution and Investigation, in cooperation with employees of the Environment Department of the Region of Central Macedonia, conducted an inspection of a recycling facility in Kalochorì, Thessaloniki. During the inspection, piles of waste were discovered and the facility was operating without the required permits.
Specifically, scattered materials were found on the premises including rubble, plastic, textiles, electronic waste, scrap metal and wood. There were also material processing machines and a lorry loaded with dismantled wood. The unlawful activity was causing soil, subsoil and groundwater contamination, whilst degrading the quality of life for residents of the wider area.
The business was operating under the name of a 32-year-old, without a lawful permit and without environmental licensing. The 46-year-old who was present there as the person responsible for the facility was arrested because he presented forged documents for its operation. The 46-year-old woman had undertaken the licensing process and supplied the forged certificates.
A case file was opened against all three individuals for breaching environmental protection laws, for the waste management framework and for forgery. The person arrested was referred to the competent prosecutor.
