Greek security authorities announced the dismantling of a suspected terrorist group. In the course of the investigation, a 37-year-old man of Palestinian origin was arrested in Crete. According to Athens police, he is accused of involvement in the Islamist Hamas and planning terrorist attacks. Hamas is designated as a terrorist organisation by many countries.
The suspect is said to have links with two Palestinians who were recently arrested in late May in Cyprus. The three of them, according to the authorities, are said to have received joint training in the use of explosives, as police stated.
In Cyprus's port city of Larnaca, when those two individuals were arrested, materials that could be used to construct explosive devices were seized from an apartment.
The Palestinian arrested in Crete had come to Greece approximately one year ago and had been granted asylum. He recently worked seasonally at a hotel in Agios Nikolaos in Crete. A cruise ship with Israeli tourists regularly docks there, according to local media reports. The next cruise ship is expected to dock the following Tuesday.
After evidence emerged of possible involvement in Hamas, the man was monitored for several days, according to reports. The detainee is expected to be brought before a prosecutor. According to Greek television station ERT, the suspect had also rented an apartment in central Athens, where police seized chemicals and laboratory equipment that could have been used to construct a bomb.
The investigation is continuing, as police announced.
