Murder during the night, hunt for the culprit
According to ilgiorno.it, a murder took place during the night between Tuesday and Wednesday in Imbersago, in the province of Lecco. The victim, Zouhair Mahfoud, a 34-year-old Moroccan, was struck by five stab wounds inflicted with a long blade, presumably a kitchen knife or a machete. The body was abandoned by the roadside on Provincial Road 56 which skirts the town.
The chief prosecutor of the Republic's Prosecutor's Office in Lecco, Ezio Domenico Basso, coordinated the investigation and issued an arrest warrant against a 30-year-old North African identified by the carabinieri of the Operational Unit of Lecco. The man is currently at large and being searched for relentlessly by law enforcement.
A witness reported hearing people arguing outside a house before the assault. Investigators believe the perpetrator may not have been alone at the time of the crime. The killer probably had the specific objective of killing, not of frightening or injuring. The motives remain to be clarified, although investigators are hypothesising issues linked to the control of drug trafficking and dealing points between the Meratese area and the Isola Bergamasca, or a settling of scores to send a signal in criminal circles.
The murder could be the culmination of a long trail of violence. In the summer of 2024, in Brivio, Mahfoud had already escaped an ambush with billhook blows in which he was wounded along with one of his two brothers. The results of the autopsy, expected probably for Monday, could provide further clarification on the dynamics of the attack and on the victim's death.
"Search activities are underway for the recipient of the arrest warrant by the carabinieri of the provincial command of Lecco," the chief prosecutor Basso explained after issuing the arrest warrant. The wanted man could be in hiding both to avoid arrest and out of fear of reprisals in criminal circles.
