Drug trafficking: arrest in Reggio Calabria
According to poliziadistato.it, the mobile squad of Reggio Calabria arrested a wanted drug trafficker, a member of the Barbaro Castanu clan from Platì. The man was subject to a precautionary custody order issued by the judge for preliminary investigations at the Milan court as part of an investigation by the Guardia di finanza.
He had evaded capture during a drug operation in November and had taken refuge in the province, where investigators traced him to a drug rehabilitation community. The man is accused of criminal association aimed at drug trafficking, possession of cocaine for dealing purposes and illegal possession of firearms.
The financial police investigation involved another 28 people accused of participation in a drug trafficking operation on behalf of the Barbaro clan from Platì and the Morabito clan from Africo. The wanted man is alleged to have managed the passage of more than 3.5 tonnes of cocaine coming from South America to Italy. After his flight from Milan, police officers concentrated their search in the provincial areas, hypothesising that he had taken refuge in his place of origin to seek protection from local organised crime.
