Cyber attack on Brenner mega-tunnel
According to la Repubblica, the Brenner Basis Tunnel was the target of a hacker attack in mid-October. Construction company Bbt Se confirmed that criminals gained access to some data available on the internet. Investigative authorities have identified the group "Everest", a Russian-speaking criminal hacker network specialising in ransomware and extortion operations, as responsible.
A spokesperson for Bbt Se told the Tiroler Tageszeitung that the compromised systems were immediately isolated, involving external experts and alerting the competent authorities. The access obtained by the criminal hackers was described as "partial" and limited to data accessible via the internet.
According to the company, the incident has so far not compromised the construction of the tunnel. However, the exact scope of the data breached and the depth of penetration into the network remain unknown. Bbt Se refused to comment on whether negotiations with potential extortionists have been initiated. Investigations are ongoing.
