Cantù, man killed by stabbing in bar over dispute about Calabrese accent

Murder in a bar in Como province

According to ilgiorno.it, in the early afternoon of 31 October 2026 in Cantù, an escalated dispute led to the death of Aldo Marra, a 55-year-old carpenter. The attacker, Cristian Maffia aged 33, struck the victim with a knife during a discussion in the Bivio bar in Vighizzolo, a hamlet of the Como municipality.

The dispute arose from trivial reasons: Marra allegedly mocked Maffia over his Calabrese accent. Maffia reacted by inflicting at least two stab wounds — one to the lower abdomen, which was fatal, and another to the right shoulder — causing severe bleeding. Areu paramedics attended to the victim at around 2 p.m., but Marra went into cardiorespiratory arrest during transport and died shortly before arrival at the accident and emergency department of Sant'Antonio Abate hospital in Cantù.

Carabinieri from the Operations and Radio Mobile Unit of the Cantù Company detained Maffia at the scene. When questioned, the man said he had left home already armed with a knife because he feared encountering a creditor to whom he owed 200 euros. He stated that when Marra mocked him for his accent, he became frightened by the victim's build and reacted by stabbing him, according to his version intending only to wound him.

Maffia, who has a record for drug trafficking and offences against the person, will have to answer to the charge of murder aggravated by trivial motives. The charge carries the risk of life imprisonment.
