Thefts at municipal cemetery, young man charged

According to questure.poliziadistato.it, the State Police have charged a 22-year-old man with aggravated theft following two robberies committed at the municipal cemetery of Pisticci in the days preceding All Souls' Day. The young man, already known to law enforcement for crimes against property, was identified thanks to descriptions provided by the victims.

The first elderly woman told officers that a youth had approached her while she was distracted and stolen her wallet from a bag hanging on the gate of the family chapel. The wallet contained 20 euros. The man fled immediately after being noticed by the woman. Shortly before, a second wallet had been stolen from the jacket pocket of another elderly woman while she was cleaning the chapel; that wallet contained 35 euros and some coins.

Officers from the patrol unit obtained descriptions of the suspected perpetrator and his clothing, immediately launching a search of the area. While heading towards a bus stop, they noticed a young man boarding a public transport vehicle that was departing. The youth matched the description and was recognised as a subject already known for previous crimes against property.

The Judicial Police Squad of the Police Station subsequently traced the 22-year-old in the vicinity of his residence, where he was returning. During the check, the young man admitted to having committed both thefts. Officers found in the pockets of his trousers two 20-euro notes and 2.60 euros in coins. The youth reported that he had disposed of the wallets during his escape.

Subsequent searches made it possible to recover both wallets: one had been thrown in a rubbish bin inside the cemetery, the other had been abandoned near the public housing of Pisticci, based on indications provided by the young man himself. The money was fully recovered and the wallets were returned to their owners. The 22-year-old was charged before the Judicial Authority for aggravated theft.
