Tajani, victim of pro-Russian hackers: personal data put up for sale on dark web

Italy's Foreign Minister, Antonio Tajani, announced on Saturday that his personal data had been published on the dark web by a group of hackers whom he described as pro-Russian, according to Gândul. Tajani specified that the incident is directly linked to the Italian government's support for Ukraine.

"For the past few days, cybercriminals have been circulating my personal data on the dark web, exposing me and my family to threats and intimidation," Tajani said in a post on social media. He added that the attackers "are willing to pay for additional details about me and my loved ones".

The minister, who also holds the position of deputy prime minister, did not specify what categories of information had been stolen, but suggested that the cyber threat remains active. "I will not allow myself to be intimidated in any way," Tajani stressed. "I will continue to work to defend my ministry and Italy, and I will strengthen cooperation to protect ourselves together."

Prime Minister Giorgia Meloni expressed solidarity with Tajani "following revelations about the activities of pro-Russian hackers and the publication on the dark web of personal data". Meloni described attempts to sell confidential information about government officials as "a matter of serious concern, which must be addressed with the utmost determination".

Tajani's announcement came in the context of a series of false bomb threats across Europe, which caused flight diversions, as well as attacks on refrigeration systems in supermarkets and drone incursions. Added to these are threats to the security of journalists.

Moscow did not comment on the incident. Russia has repeatedly denied any involvement in cyber attacks or hacking operations conducted beyond its borders.
