Police halt attempted fraud targeting elderly woman
According to questure.poliziadistato.it, on 2 October State Police attended the home of an elderly woman in Cava de' Tirreni after she was contacted by telephone by individuals impersonating members of the Police Forces. The callers pressed her to collect money and valuable items to hand over to their alleged representative.
Officers from the Cava de' Tirreni Police Commissioner's office arrived promptly and identified a man in the immediate vicinity of the residence who, according to the victim's description, matched the person tasked with collecting the money and valuables. The man had previous convictions for similar offences.
During investigations, the officers established that the victim was still on the phone with the fraudsters, who continued to pressure her into handing over the money. The criminal attempt was halted. The woman filed a complaint and the man was taken to police headquarters.
At the conclusion of the investigation, the individual was referred to the Judicial Authority for attempted fraud. A mobile telephone in his possession and an object found in his vehicle, believed to be of possibly illicit origin, were seized. The Anti-crime Division of Salerno Police Headquarters issued a mandatory removal notice against the man.
